Mountaineering

The mountains of Alaska and British Columbia have long inspired climbers from around the world. With vast glaciers, rugged peaks, and a true wilderness setting, this region offers a mountaineering experience unlike anywhere else. Bordering the largest non-polar ice cap on Earth, Chilkoot High Adventure Base is ideally positioned to access one of the most dramatic alpine environments in the Western Hemisphere..

Location

Our mountaineering programs are based out of Haines, Alaska with climbing routes accessed in a remote, narrow corridor of British Columbia. This small sliver of alpine terrain offers spectacular views, expansive glaciers, and exceptional mountaineering conditions. From alpine base camps, instructors and scouts select from a range of climbing objectives—from beginner-friendly summits to more technical routes in a truly wild setting.

A Typical Day

Days often begin with an early alpine start for a summit push, followed by technical skill development and climbing activities such as:

  • Ice climbing on glacial seracs

  • Rappelling and ropework on nearby nunataks

  • Glacier travel and crevasse navigation

  • Ridge ascents with panoramic alpine views

Under expert guidance, scouts develop climbing and expedition skills while experiencing the thrill of high alpine travel—moving through crevassed icefalls, traversing ridgelines, and establishing scenic mountain base camps.

Experience Level

No prior mountaineering experience is required. With enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, scouts will gain the skills and confidence to explore mountain environments for years to come.
