10 Day Itinerary
10 Day Itinerary
The following 10-day itineraries are a standardized option offered by Chilkoot High Adventure Base. We are happy to structure a custom adventure to fit your troop’s specific goals.
Option 1: Sea Kayaking • Backpacking • Rafting
Day 0 – Travel to Haines
Chilkoot High Adventure Base is located on the Haines Peninsula, surrounded by fjords, temperate rainforest, and sweeping glacier views. It’s the perfect launch point for multi-day wilderness expeditions in Alaska and Canada.
Days 1–3 – Sea Kayaking
We begin on the waters of the Lynn Canal—one of the longest and deepest fjords in the world. This area offers exceptional paddling for both beginners and experienced kayakers. Scouts travel in double and triple kayaks, exploring wild and pristine coastline where encounters with sea lions, porpoises, humpback whales, and bald eagles are common. Nights are spent camping on sandy beaches beneath towering peaks and glaciers.
Days 4–8 – Backpacking
The journey continues north into the Yukon Territory, one of the wildest landscapes in North America. Over five days, scouts will learn backcountry travel and navigation skills while trekking through alpine valleys, glacial outwash plains, and vibrant wildflower meadows. Wildlife sightings often include grizzly bears, Dall sheep, and ground-nesting birds. On the final night, we’ll camp near the trailhead to prepare for the rafting segment.
Day 9 – Whitewater Rafting
We’ll travel farther north into Canada for a day on the Blanchard River. Under the leadership of our regional outfitter partner, Tatshenshini Expediting, and accompanied by Chilkoot guides, scouts will learn paddling techniques and river safety before tackling a dynamic stretch of river. The Blanchard begins with gentle drops that build into lively whitewater before converging with the Tatshenshini River. We’ll return to Haines that evening.
Day 10 – Depart / Travel Home
Option 2: Mountaineering • Rafting • Sea Kayaking
Day 0 – Travel to Haines
Chilkoot High Adventure Base serves as our base of operations, offering quick access to alpine and coastal terrain.
Days 1–4 – Mountaineering
We’ll depart Haines early and travel to a small alpine corridor in British Columbia, accessed via Skagway, Alaska and the Klondike Highway. This area features rugged peaks, glaciated terrain, and excellent climbing objectives. Scouts will establish an alpine base camp and learn foundational mountaineering skills—including glacier travel, ridge climbing, and ropework—under the guidance of Chilkoot instructors.
Day 5 – Whitewater Rafting
We’ll travel north to the Blanchard River for a day of whitewater rafting led by Tatshenshini Expediting with Chilkoot guides supporting the group. After a safety briefing and skills session, we’ll paddle through fun, approachable rapids that build in intensity as the Blanchard joins the Tatshenshini River. We’ll return to base camp that evening.
Days 6–9 – Sea Kayaking
The expedition wraps up on the waters of Lynn Canal. Over four days, scouts will travel in double and triple kayaks along remote coastline, camping on pristine beaches and exploring coves rich with wildlife. Expect sightings of sea lions, porpoises, humpback whales, bald eagles, and possibly bears along the shore.
