Alaska Scouting Adventures

Backpacking

Backpacking
3-10 days

The terrain surrounding Haines, Alaska is renowned among adventurers across the world.

With Chilkoot High Adventure Base, scouts have the opportunity to explore lush forested mountain terrain just outside of Haines.  The Takshanuk mountain range is where Chilkoot High Adventure Base offers a popular backpacking trip on Mt. Ripinsky.  Wildlife viewing is very popular here due to a high amount of wild berries.  Another popular Chilkoot High Adventure Base backpacking course is on the Chilkoot Trail, outside of Skagway, AK.  The Chilkoot Trail is a historic trail used first by the Tlingit natives as a trade route to the interior.  During the Gold Rush, stampeders traveled this 33-mile trail to Lake Bennett.

The Yukon Territory offers some of the wildest terrain in North America, a landscape where you may step over the speckled eggs of a groundnesting bird or watch a grizzly bear feasting on roots growing in the outwash of a glacial river.  A destination for backpackers seeking beauty, wildlife and remoteness, this course explores Kluane National Park, designated by the United Nations as a world heritage site.

Picture yourself camping in a field of purple and red wildflowers in the understory of a birch grove.  The scale, wildness and beauty of this area make it a world-class destination.
