Build Your Own

At the Chilkoot High Adventure Base, we work directly with your troop to design a fully customized high-adventure program tailored to your goals, skill level, and schedule — at no additional cost. Units can combine wilderness first aid training, glacier mountaineering, rock and ice climbing, sea kayaking, and whitewater rafting into a multi-day expedition built around their specific objectives.

We specialize in creating structured, custom high-adventure experiences for Scout troops seeking more than a standard itinerary. Programs can emphasize leadership development, technical skill progression, expedition-style travel, service projects, or extended backcountry immersion. Whether your troop wants a skills-focused training program or a diversified Alaska expedition, every custom adventure is delivered with professional guides, conservative safety standards, and high-level technical instruction in a true wilderness environment.

Alaska Scouting Adventures is a high-adventure program in Southeast Alaska offering multi-day backpacking, sea kayaking, mountaineering, and rafting experiences designed specifically for Scouting America youth groups.

What is the minimum age requirement?

Participants must be at least 12 years old. All youth should be physically prepared, mentally mature, and capable of managing personal gear and self-care in a remote environment.

How physically demanding are the programs?

Our backpacking and mountaineering programs are challenging but achievable with preparation. Participants should be comfortable hiking with a pack and participating in full-day outdoor activities.

What is included in the program?

Programs include professional guides, group camping equipment, technical gear (when applicable), meals during the program, and all scheduled activities.

What is not included?

Travel to and from Alaska, personal gear, gratuities, and any hotel accommodations before or after the program are not included.

What kind of training do the guides have?

Our guides are professionally trained in wilderness leadership, risk management, and emergency medical response. Many hold Wilderness First Responder certifications and technical climbing or paddling credentials.

What should participants bring?

Participants should bring personal clothing suitable for layering, rain gear, sturdy footwear, sleeping gear (if required), and personal items. A detailed packing list is provided after registration.

What happens in bad weather?

Programs operate rain or shine. Guides adjust itineraries as needed for safety. Severe weather delays may result in schedule changes.

How remote are the programs?

Our expeditions operate in very remote wilderness areas with no road access and limited communication. Participants must be prepared for rugged conditions.

How are safety and risk managed?

We maintain conservative guide-to-participant ratios, carry emergency communication devices, and follow structured safety protocols for all activities.

How do we get to the program location?

Groups typically fly into Juneau, Alaska (JNU). Detailed travel instructions are provided during the booking process.

Can leaders or adults participate?

Yes. Adult leaders are welcome and play an important role in the experience. All participants must meet physical and program readiness requirements.

What is the cancellation policy?

Deposits and cancellation terms are outlined in our registration materials. We strongly recommend trip protection insurance.

How do we reserve a program?

Reservations are made by contacting our office to confirm availability and submitting the required deposit and registration forms.
