SAFETY & RISK MANAGEMENT

Safety is our highest priority. For nearly 20 years, Chilkoot High Adventure Base and International Wilderness Leadership School (IWLS) have operated expeditions around the world with an excellent safety record. This strong performance reflects the professionalism, field experience, and risk management expertise of our staff.

Our programs are built on proven systems, thorough preparation, and highly trained instructors who prioritize participant well-being in every decision.

INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP

IWLS has been at the forefront of risk management innovation in outdoor leadership training.

  • Among the first programs to carry satellite phones on all courses.

  • Early adopters of pulse oximeters for high-altitude expeditions.

  • Maintain reliable communication through SPOT satellite messengers and Marine VHF radios.

These systems allow for immediate contact and coordinated response in remote environments.

RESCUE SUPPORT

IWLS has supported hundreds of rescues and evacuations across Alaska, South America, and the Himalaya, including extensive work on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Chilkoot instructors are active members of EMS and Search and Rescue (SAR) organizations nationwide. We collaborate closely with land management agencies to support emergency response in all program areas.
